Endless River Adventures partners with Diversify Whitewater and Need More Outdoors to provide a 2 day youth leadership kayak instruction program for local BIPOC kids ages 8-16 in western North Carolina.

BRYSON CITY, NC (April 18, 2022)– Thanks to Diversify Whitewater and Need More Outdoors, Endless River Adventures (ERA) is pleased to announce a two day youth leadership kayak program. The program will run on Friday, June 3, and Saturday, June 4, and is specifically for 8 local BIPOC youth. Thanks to Diversity Whitewater and Need More Outdoors, the program will fully fund each participant.

The main goal of this program is to create an environment where participants will feel comfortable pursuing kayaking as well as other outdoors activities. By introducing a group of young people in the 828 area to the wonderful sport of whitewater kayaking, we hope to help create a new community of young people who share a desire to learn more skills and participate in the sport.

Whitewater kayaking is a sport that can help build confidence, self-esteem, leadership skills and a love of the outdoors. While there are barriers for young people learning how to kayak, including cost of instruction, access to whitewater gear, and lack of representation, Endless River Adventures is hoping to help mitigate these barriers for the local BIPOC youth in the 828 area by providing the scholarship, as well as future opportunities through our local community programs.

“We know that nature has the power to inspire you, challenge you, and help you discover what you’re capable of,” explains Juliet Jacobsen Kastorff, executive director of Need More Outdoors, speaking on the importance of getting children outdoors – especially those who have more barriers than others. “That’s why we are on a mission to get more kids outside to enjoy the beauty and wonder of western North Carolina. We believe every young person should have the chance to experience outdoor adventures and educational opportunities regardless of their economic situation.”

Endless River Adventures
Endless River Adventures has been providing high quality kayak instruction and whitewater rafting trips in Western North Carolina since 1992. ERA’s mission is to provide their guests with services and experiences that will foster a sense of love and appreciation for the natural world that surrounds all of us.

Need More Outdoors
Need More Outdoors, a nonprofit organization that was created in 2020, works to serve the underprivileged youth in Western North Carolina. By providing opportunities for the youth of WNC, they hope to reduce barriers, improve health, and build confidence in the outdoors.

Diversify Whitewater
Diversify Whitewater, a nonprofit organization that was created in 2020, strives to promote diversity, equity, and inclusion in whitewater paddlesports for BIPOC and allies. Through the events Diversify Whitewater has been hosting, they are hoping to foster a sense of community and build knowledge for BIPOC and allies to share with future generations.

Our kids camps are more than just kayaking. They’re about socializing with other kids, learning to look out for your fellow river mates, learning river rescue skills, and enjoying the simple things in life like swimming on the river and exploring the ecosystems surrounding the rivers here in western North Carolina. We believe- and the studies support, the idea that childrens’ happiness can be derived from experiences rather than material possessions.

Our annual kayak camps are for kids who want to focus on kayaking. These multi-day camps give children the opportunity to immerse themselves in whitewater kayaking. They are all about learning and improving river skills under the guidance of our instructors and fellow young people. All camp sessions are day camps. We look for you to have your kids at our shop at 9AM. And be there to pick them up at 4PM. Bonus: It’s the opportunity for you to indulge in some Adult Free time! Take a little time for yourself to kayak, bike, hike, shop, spa or just taking some time to explore our beautiful part of western North Carolina. Here are dates for our summer kids camps.

EcoSplash Camp is for kids who love getting wet and are excited to explore nature. EcoSplash camp is about collaborative playtime, each day broken into two parts. Part One is river time. For river time, kayaks, duckys or rafts are all options, providing the opportunity for young friends to share time together on the river –using rafts, duckys and kayaks. The second half of the day will be for exploring the local eco-systems with snorkels in the river, and hikes looking for medical plants and edibles. We have teamed up with Mainspring Conservation Trust for the youth environmental education segment of our EcoSplash Camps. to encourage hands-on educational activities that allow kids to experience their natural surroundings in a way they wouldn’t be able to inside a classroom. Check out our EcoSplash Camp Dates

The goal of our EcoSPlash camps is to help young people appreciate collaborative playtime more than toys or electronic gadgets. Following the studies of child psychologists like Dr. Margot Sunderland, who has written extensively about the belief that experiences like our Kayak and EcoSplash Camps boost long-term happiness and makes children smarter. It is the combination of supporting children’s explorative urge and their capacity to play.

We offer single and multi-day custom camp dates. We understand that summers are crazy busy. So if our scheduled camp dates don’t work, put a group of kids together (minimum of 4) and we will do a custom camp for the group.

Sometimes adults want to be kids and play with their kids. We offer private instruction year-round that is perfect for families looking to learn together.

A day rental is defined as 24 hours or until 9AM the following morning. We will charge an automatic $50 to your credit card if the rental is out past 9AM the following morning as it will inconvenience the next person coming to rent. All dry suit rentals must be secured with a credit card and a copy of the customer’s Driver License.

We expect these suits to be used in a whitewater environment. A little wear is normal. However, if you tear the suit, rip a gasket, or destroy the socks, you’ll be responsible for covering the damage or full retail cost of the suit (this decision will be up to the staff member in charge of return). You are responsible for any lost equipment while in their possession. The extent of the liability will be limited to the wholesale cost and freight charges for the product.

We ask that you wear shoes or booties over top of dry suit socks. Dry suit socks are made to keep you dry but are not designed for walking around without shoes. Walking or even standing in dry suit socks can damage them and cause leaks. When changing into your drysuit, take care to stand on a tarp, carpet square, Tupperware lid, or a floor mat from your car.

A whitewater kayaker’s goal is to have a bomproof roll.

To help reach with the goal of successfully rolling / how to practice your roll / the technique behind rolling.. the Endless River Adventures Team and I have spent years writing articles about every aspect of rolling.

But today we are going to talk about the not-rolling-up part of kayaking –
and I am going to use my recent swim as fodder for this.

There are two general reasons you end up swimming out of your Kayak

One is pilot error resulting in doing something like surfing in a big hole that just does not want to let you out.
The second reason is falling over for whatever reason and not coming up.
Of those two scenarios, only one can be directly attributed to the roll not working: that’s falling over and not rolling up.
There came a day recently when that’s just what happened to me.

Even the Best Can Swim out of their Kayak

Yep – the one who always rolls, who has a beautiful roll, who teaches hundreds of people to roll and fixes just as many people who are struggling with their roll, had a swim. And not because of falling into some huge hole. While the whole thing started after inadvertently dropping into a hole, it was such a silly hole that you could have heard me laughing about it if you had paddled by. It was funny. It was a Class III rapid. There was nothing particularly threatening about surfing in the hole, or rolling after. So when I set up to roll and nothing happened, I casually switched to the other side, and was a bit surprised when I did not roll up. Five rolls later, it was time to accept that the “bombproof roll” was not there.

Of course I had to over-analyze the whole situation and I want to share with you why I think what happened happened.

Rolling your kayak is easy

Once you learn how to do it, you realize rolling a kayak is actually very easy. The mental aptitude to actually fire off that roll in the chaos of whitewater can take additional time, but there comes a day after you’ve learned to roll that you just do not like to swim. You focus and just do it. So what happens when after years of a “bombproof roll” you do not roll up? I am going to grossly generalize here and sum it up with two scenarios.

Scenario #1: Poor Technique when Rolling

You can watch a river full of people roll and see so many variations of getting up. You can listen to kayakers swear that their version of rolling is the bomb – even when their version contains some pretty poor technique. Inevitably rolls that involve poor technique are going to fail no matter how awesome the paddler. The bottom line is: if you do not learn/use good technique, or if you fall into bad technique – eventually the roll will not work for you. We have all sorts of articles about this for you and that’s without even going into why you should roll on both sides here!!

Bombproofing Your Roll: Use it or lose it

The irony about whitewater kayaking is that you start out tipping over frequently. Falling over frequently and swimming motivates one to learn how to roll. About the time you learn to roll, you also learn how to not fall over so frequently. And before you know it, you are bragging about “dry hair days” on the river. I will use myself as an example: I work on the river 200+ days/year. This does not include my play time. Of those 200+ days/year, it is unusual if I accidently tip over one or two times a year. It is so infrequent that people are rather surprised when I do tip over.

Rolling a Kayak is so very mental.

You can have the best roll in the world, but if you do not have the mental aptitude to use it, it’s not going to be there for you when you most need it. What do you do to keep your bombproof roll bombproof? Roll. All the time. If playboating is not your cup of tea, then make sure you spend time rolling on the river – but not just in an eddy or winter pool rolling sessions. Rarely does a good boater inadvertently fall over in an eddy. You’ve got to head out into a wave train/on a squirrely eddy line/somewhere you really do not want to be upside down, and roll. Not just on one side, but both sides so that switching is reinforced (I could not resist adding that).

Keeping things positive on the river

Reinforce rolling with positive energy on the river. When you are on the river, makes sure and leave negative energy behind – yours and/or other people’s. Kayaking is supposed to be a wonderfully positive experience. If you surround yourself in negative energy, it can affect your paddling state of mind.

Upside down time = rolling = having fun kayaking!

If I was my own coach, I would suggest that a play boat was needed. Why? Because I do not spend enough time upside down. Playboating gets you upside down – maybe not in in a Class iV+ rapid, but surfing a hole or stern squirting. When one heads out to playboat, the upside down time is not a “mistake” but part of having fun on the river. Upside down is fun. Rolling is fun. Lots of upside down time = more rolling = more fun. This then helps for when you do inevitably do flip in a rapid… you just roll up. It’s called a bombproof roll – and it is attainable.

If you’ve had a swim recently that was not about poor technique, but about any of the above, do what I am going to do: don’t waste time dwelling on that silly swim. Go find opportunities to reinforce the positive about rolling up. Paddle out and tip over with a smile. And not just every once in a while, but a bunch. Even better!! Plan on dusting off that playboat as soon as it warms up and go have fun doing things that get you upside down. Remember: upside down time = rolling = fun.

Nantahala River, NC. – 2022 – Endless River Adventures, in partnership with our industry sponsors, is pleased to announce the 18th annual Nantahala Open. The date of this year’s event is Saturday, April 23rd, 2022. The Nantahala Open will be dedicated to Need More Outdoors – a nonprofit organization on a mission to strengthen Western North Carolina communities by empowering youth through outdoor adventures and education.

The Nantahala Open has gained the reputation as a fun competition; open to all boaters no matter the experience or ability, consisting of categories for every skill level–and the prizes that go along with them! The competition takes place at Nantahala Falls from 10:00AM through 3:00PM. Following the competition Endless River Adventures invites everyone to an Open House After Party and screening of the day’s footage at Endless River Adventures

The best part of the event is the support that manufacturers give to an event that is purely for fun. This is not a “sponsored” event; the participants are typically Nantahala boaters and those who just enjoy a great day of fun on the river. The support that sponsors have given has always been over and above. The event would not be successful without them.

The Endless River team will coordinate the event from the launching pad at Nantahala Falls, with video cameras arranged to film participants. Categories always include such events as Best Freestyle through the Falls, Best Top Hole Move, Most Creative Eddy Catching, Best Self-Rescue, Best Carnage, Cutest Run, and our favorite category – best pool toy… and anything that comes to mind as the day unfolds! In addition, there will be industry-wide support for the event in terms of prizes. Industry sponsors make it possible to award great prizes for all categories. Everyone comes out of the Nantahala Open a winner!

Schedule for the Day:

10AM – 3PM Set up at staging beach above Nantahala Falls. Come at the beginning of your run or finish up the day looking like a star!

4PM – 8PM – Music Food and Beer at Endless River Adventures. Bring your appetite as we will be selling delicious post-river food. And adult beverages will be served!

8PM(ish) – 10PM – viewing of 2022 Nantahala Open Video and prizes!! We will finish off the event with a raffle. The grand prize is to be determined.

In addition to the main event, there is a scheduled release on both the Cheoah and the Cascades/Upper Nantahala all weekend!!

April 23rd will be here before you know it so start making plans now and help make the 18th annual Nantahala Open an event that reflects what we all do– have fun on the river!

For women traveling abroad, there are a few cultural hitches that can make for awkward moments.
Nothing that should dissuade a female from embarking on an international trip,
but if known ahead of time, can make traveling as a female a whole lot easier.

Toilet Paper
something many of us take for granted. But once out of metropolitan areas, there are many countries that consider toilet paper a luxury. If you are not a drip dryer, make sure you bring along a travel size roll of paper. And work on your squats before you go—many toilets are not really conducive to sitting down.

When it is “that time”
The last thing you were thinking about when packing for your trip was the ol’ monthly girl time. And even if you check the calendar to make sure you are not going to overlap, traveling often screws up the timetable just to be a nuisance. Pack for it even if it is not going to happen. Outside of large metropolitan areas, many cultures take a different view on how the monthly plague is handled. Solution: pack enough of your favorite product for the time you are going to be gone. And think about disposal. If you are traveling in a country that has little access to public bathrooms, or has septic systems that do not accommodate paper products, you need a disposal solution. Bring a supply of snack-size zip lock bags. And have a bit of toilet paper folded in each one (for reasons already mentioned).

Prescriptions
Many countries bypass the doctor when handing out prescription drugs. You walk in to a pharmacy, describe your ailment, and as long as you are not asking for your favorite recreational drug, you will probably be taken care of. Exception to the rule: birth control pills. Don’t leave home without them. It is not only uncomfortable asking for them, but all but impossible to get a prescription filled in countries that do not exactly condone the use of modern medicine in birth control.

Changing Clothes
If you are visiting a country that has religious and/or cultural stigmas about public nudity for women, don’t embarrass your host country. You will not win any friends flaunting your inhibitions. Respect their culture—even if their culture is not shy about calendar photos of half-dressed women snuggling up to sweating beer bottles, they might not take you changing in front of them well; therefore, bring a changing towel, dress, skirt, long shirt.

Cat calls/wolf whistles/being ignored
Sure it might be sexist in your country. And it is in theirs. But that is beyond the point. In many countries (Latin American countries for example) if you are a good-looking lady, you are going to be appreciated. Don’t shoot them the finger and shout “pig” in every language you know. Just continue on your way and be flattered. On the other extreme, there are certain cultures where you will be overlooked if you are part of a group embarking on an adventure—particularly an athletic adventure. Don’t be offended when there is a show of surprise that you are going to do the same thing as the guys…kayaking a river, climbing a mountain, riding a mountain bike. There are cultures–even in this day and time, where women do not participate in such activities, much less alone with a group of guys. Don’t back off from what you are doing, but don’t take things personally if dubious eyes turn towards you when you start putting on your gear.

The Bar Scene
In many countries, it is against every cultural norm for a woman to hang out in a bar. Nightclub/dance club – yes, but bars – no. That doesn’t mean don’t go—but make sure you are with friends if you do so. Do not try being a bar fly on your own; it will be taken the wrong way—even if all you intended was to have a glass of wine before going to your room for the night.

Above all, remember that television supersedes you. Take care not to play into the preconceived notions that certain cultures have about women from your culture.
Take the time to do your homework before traveling to learn the faux pas of your destination’s culture.
And remember that you are an emissary for all the women that will travel after you.

During the winter, it is tempting to save all your roll practice for the pool. And for some – the winter pool sessions are the only time a roll is really ever practiced intentionally. True, winter paddling is not really conducive to lots of roll practice for most of us, given the tendency to strive for dry, ice-free hair days on the river. It is tempting to save roll practice for the nice warm swimming pool. So there you go, diligently practicing your roll all winter long at weekly pool sessions. Big confidence booster when that roll is working. If you used your time well, you made sure to practice rolling on both sides. Maybe a hand roll was added over the winter. Feeling good about all that work, you are now heading back to the river for spring paddling, only to find that the first time you unexpectedly tip over, your roll is not there. Swimming in cold water – dry suit or not, is a shock to the system. And a confidence killer. What’s that about?? And were all those nights at pool sessions over the winter a waste of time?

Rolling is the one kayak technique that is not like “riding a bike”

Practicing your roll is essential. So the short answer about rolling at pool sessions: no, you did not waste your time going to pool sessions all winter. But if that’s true, what’s with having an awesome pool/flat water roll but not rolling up on the river?

First off, rolling is extremely mental. If you learned to roll/practiced your roll all winter in a warm swimming pool, dressed only in a pair of shorts and bikini top and now you waddle your way down to the river in a dry suit plus multi layers and skull cap and pogies and and and…. When you tip over it’s just not going to feel the same. So the tendency is to rush – because the water is darned cold if nothing else. If your roll doesn’t work on the first try, that full-fledged ice cream headache you end up with drives you to promptly rush the second roll even more. And then you swim.

Practice makes permanent with the kayak roll

Practice does not always make perfect. Practice does always make permanent. If you “practiced” your roll, which happens to be a pretty bad roll but gets you up all winter, or were taught a roll that got you up in the pool, but was not really good technique, that is the roll you are going to take to the river. Once you take away that warm cuddly pool water and your roll doesn’t work so well, you go back to rushing your roll. And then you swim. Practice is good. But you have to be practicing good technique.

Why doesn’t my pool roll work on the river

You worked all winter fixing/learning your roll. Technique-wise everyone was giving you big thumbs up. But as soon as you are upside down on the river, you revert to your pre-pool-sessions roll. And swim. Don’t throw your hands up in despair. You have the makings for a new-you roll. The problem is that when you were practicing the new-you roll, it was in the pool. The water was warm, you were surrounded by helpful folks ready to t-rescue you, and you only tipped over when you were good and ready. Nose plugs were on, your support staff was lined up, the side of the pool was close at hand, and after a nudge or two, you were upside down. That’s not how the whole upside down thing works on the river is it! So until you take the time to practice rolling in moving water, when you tip over you are going to default to the old bad roll/no roll at all. It is muscle memory – but that muscle memory is not stored in your muscles, but in your brain. That old roll is still stubbornly locked away in your cerebellum. It takes time to move that muscle memory out and replace it with the new-you roll. Replacing will not happen if you never tip over on the river. Or if you only practice in an eddy.

How to get your river roll

Dress appropriately on the river and take time to roll. In an eddy. Peeling out in the current. Have support on hand so that you do not have to swim every time. If it is not working, don’t beat yourself up. Get some instruction. The longer you practice bad rolling the more permanent it becomes. Or the less you practice your roll, the less likely it will work for you.

Rolling is an essential component to having fun on the river. And it is well within everyone’s abilities to roll on the river. You have to give the roll the time and the coaching needed to see it working for you.
Endless River Adventures is proud to support Need More Outdoors – a nonprofit with a priority to get community kids outdoors, enjoying their own backyard. The nonprofit is created in the spirit of Maria Noakes, a world-class whitewater kayaker who cared deeply about outdoor experiences for the youth of western North Carolina, and showed her support volunteering her time

The Mission of Need More Outdoors

The mission of Need More Outdoors is to strengthen Western North Carolina communities by empowering youth through outdoor adventures and education. Need More Outdoors provides opportunities for underserved youth to participate in a range of activities on and around the waterways of Western North Carolina. We introduce participants to the outdoors, build ties between youth and the local community, empower youth through outdoor recreation and education, and reduce barriers to participation in outdoor activities. Our programs aim to improve health, build confidence and life skills, and inspire a lifelong connection to nature. We applaud NMO’s mission statement because of our own commitment to the western North Carolina community, and youth in particular.

Partnerships

Endless River Adventures partnered with NMO on a number of initial programs during the summer of 2020, including a Girl’s Leadership program for ten girls from western North Carolina, scholarships to Summer Kids Kayak Camps and fund raising efforts through gear donations. We’ve already seen community partnership happening with NMO. In 2020, NMO collborated with the Shannon Christy Fund and the LiveLikeMaria Fund to host the Girls Leadership Workshop and with the Mainspring Conservation Trust’s Youth Environmental Education program to host the EcoSplash Camps.

Located in western North Carolina’s Graham County, the Cheoah River – named for the Cherokee word for “otter” is a unique stretch of whitewater not typical of southeastern whitewater. The Cheoah is unusually continuous with a steep gradient in its 9.25 miles of Class IV+ whitewater.

A Quick History of the Cheoah River

The river was dammed in 1928 by Alcoa Co. to create Lake Santeetlah and generate hydropower, similar to many other western North Carolina Rivers. The original federal license did not require recreational flows and the Cheoah River – from Santeelah Dam to Lake Calderwood, was a dry river bed for over 70+ years.

While the streambed was dewatered by the bypass, that does not mean there was never any water in the river. Paddlers began eyeing the Cheoah in the 1970’s. A contingent of southeastern pioneers including Jimmy Holcombe, John John Kennedy, Ken Kastorff, Homer King and Arlo Kleinrath became regulars on the river when rain brought the levels up.

Many of the rapids earned their original names during this time. The stories are colorful and entertaining of those early runs – being done in fiberglass boats that were all about 13.2′ in length, with names like the Mark IV, the Phoenix Savage and Slipper, and Ken and Homer’s favorite creek boat: the Seda Cobra end hole C-2.

One of our personal favorite stores is how the rapid Joe’s Demise earned its name.

When the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) dam license came up for renewal, the current power company, Brookfield Renewable, was obligated to work with stakeholders including American Whitewater and other paddling groups, Graham County, the Forest Service, the state Wildlife Commission, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and river outfitters to reach an agreement that balanced out the needs of the power company with the biology of the river and the economy of the local region. The first scheduled release happened in the fall of 2005

Why the Cheoah Release Dates are so Restricted

One of the challenges with the Cheoah River is that the license mandated that the releases had to simulate natural flows in the stream bed. One of the reasons for this is that during the relicensing process, the infamous elk toad mussel – an endangered specie, was discovered by Federal Fish & Wildlife. To this day, Federal Fish & Wildlife and the US Forest Service are introducing species into the stream bed to study. Because of this, there is great resistance to changing the release dates and/or increasing the number of release dates in a year.

2021 Release Dates for the Cheoah River
