Nantahala River, NC. – 2022 – Endless River Adventures, in partnership with our industry sponsors, is pleased to announce the 18th annual Nantahala Open. The date of this year’s event is Saturday, April 23rd, 2022. The Nantahala Open will be dedicated to Need More Outdoors – a nonprofit organization on a mission to strengthen Western North Carolina communities by empowering youth through outdoor adventures and education.

The Nantahala Open has gained the reputation as a fun competition; open to all boaters no matter the experience or ability, consisting of categories for every skill level–and the prizes that go along with them! The competition takes place at Nantahala Falls from 10:00AM through 3:00PM. Following the competition Endless River Adventures invites everyone to an Open House After Party and screening of the day’s footage at Endless River Adventures

The best part of the event is the support that manufacturers give to an event that is purely for fun. This is not a “sponsored” event; the participants are typically Nantahala boaters and those who just enjoy a great day of fun on the river. The support that sponsors have given has always been over and above. The event would not be successful without them.

The Endless River team will coordinate the event from the launching pad at Nantahala Falls, with video cameras arranged to film participants. Categories always include such events as Best Freestyle through the Falls, Best Top Hole Move, Most Creative Eddy Catching, Best Self-Rescue, Best Carnage, Cutest Run, and our favorite category – best pool toy… and anything that comes to mind as the day unfolds! In addition, there will be industry-wide support for the event in terms of prizes. Industry sponsors make it possible to award great prizes for all categories. Everyone comes out of the Nantahala Open a winner!

Schedule for the Day:

10AM – 3PM Set up at staging beach above Nantahala Falls. Come at the beginning of your run or finish up the day looking like a star!

4PM – 8PM – Music Food and Beer at Endless River Adventures. Bring your appetite as we will be selling delicious post-river food. And adult beverages will be served!

8PM(ish) – 10PM – viewing of 2022 Nantahala Open Video and prizes!! We will finish off the event with a raffle. The grand prize is to be determined.

In addition to the main event, there is a scheduled release on both the Cheoah and the Cascades/Upper Nantahala all weekend!!

April 23rd will be here before you know it so start making plans now and help make the 18th annual Nantahala Open an event that reflects what we all do– have fun on the river!

Stay tuned for more updates on event specifics! Keep an eye on the Endless River Adventures Facebook.

Located in western North Carolina’s Graham County, the Cheoah River – named for the Cherokee word for “otter” is a unique stretch of whitewater not typical of southeastern whitewater. The Cheoah is unusually continuous with a steep gradient in its 9.25 miles of Class IV+ whitewater.

A Quick History of the Cheoah River

The river was dammed in 1928 by Alcoa Co. to create Lake Santeetlah and generate hydropower, similar to many other western North Carolina Rivers. The original federal license did not require recreational flows and the Cheoah River – from Santeelah Dam to Lake Calderwood, was a dry river bed for over 70+ years.

While the streambed was dewatered by the bypass, that does not mean there was never any water in the river. Paddlers began eyeing the Cheoah in the 1970’s. A contingent of southeastern pioneers including Jimmy Holcombe, John John Kennedy, Ken Kastorff, Homer King and Arlo Kleinrath became regulars on the river when rain brought the levels up.

Many of the rapids earned their original names during this time. The stories are colorful and entertaining of those early runs – being done in fiberglass boats that were all about 13.2′ in length, with names like the Mark IV, the Phoenix Savage and Slipper, and Ken and Homer’s favorite creek boat: the Seda Cobra end hole C-2.

One of our personal favorite stores is how the rapid Joe’s Demise earned its name.

When the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) dam license came up for renewal, the current power company, Brookfield Renewable, was obligated to work with stakeholders including American Whitewater and other paddling groups, Graham County, the Forest Service, the state Wildlife Commission, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and river outfitters to reach an agreement that balanced out the needs of the power company with the biology of the river and the economy of the local region. The first scheduled release happened in the fall of 2005

Why the Cheoah Release Dates are so Restricted

One of the challenges with the Cheoah River is that the license mandated that the releases had to simulate natural flows in the stream bed. One of the reasons for this is that during the relicensing process, the infamous elk toad mussel – an endangered specie, was discovered by Federal Fish & Wildlife. To this day, Federal Fish & Wildlife and the US Forest Service are introducing species into the stream bed to study. Because of this, there is great resistance to changing the release dates and/or increasing the number of release dates in a year.

2021 Release Dates for the Cheoah River

The scheduled release dates are agreed upon in advance by a planning committee. The 2021 release dates have been made public. Following are the 2021 release dates for the Cheoah River:

REOPENING OUR PROGRAMS: WHAT WE WILL ASK OF YOU – OUR GUESTS AND FRIENDS

In preparation for reopening, please be advised that we will be making the following amendments to our normal protocol for fly fishing, kayak instruction and rafting:

We will send out detailed instructions to guests about expectations for participating in a trip, with every confirmation.

We will ask clients to arrive at their scheduled appointment time, not early, to minimize contact with others. We will spread out/stagger arrival times to accommodate this. Should guests prefer, we will provide options for meeting at the river to avoid the exposure at the shop.

Guests will be encouraged to pay in advance to limit the interaction required at the shop.

We will have a Endless River Adventures COVI-19 Waiver that our clients will sign as they come in the door. A short list of questions will be asked of every client before entering the shop. Including but not limited to, the following: Have you had a cough? Have you had a fever? Have you been around anyone exhibiting these symptoms in the last 14 days? Are you living with anyone who is currently sick or quarantined?

Waivers – we will ask that waivers are signed before arrival and brought with them. We are researching electronic waivers.

We will take the temperature of every guest when they check in for their trip. If it exceeds 99F, guests will have to leave and will be given a voucher (not a refund).

Every guest will be asked to wear a protective mask while in the store and downstairs for trip prep and in shuttle rides to and from the river

With the exception of when on the river, guests will be asked to maintain social distancing of at least 6’

Guests will be asked to use hand sanitizer as they enter the store. The doors will be opened at the beginning of the day and closed at the end of the day to avoid the amount of contact they receive.

We will promise touch-less greetings and goodbyes for our guests, and will clearly communicate this expectation when we reopen.

Car Keys will be stored in a clean, plastic bag.

In turn, we ask that you commit to being a good citizen during your time here in western North Carolina.
This means continuing to practice social distancing and protection measures when out in the community including
– Using a mask when shopping in town,
– Not getting drawn into groups of 10 or more
– Using touchless greetings (Refrain from fist bumps, hugging, hand shaking with friends and non-friends alike)
– Being mindful when planning shuttle and logistics
– Check on restaurants and breweries in Bryson City that are offering take out – and support them

Make your Black Friday a time to #optoutside!! Now is the best time of year to avoid the crowds and enjoy being outside here in the Nantahala Gorge!!

What to do as an alternative to standing in lines at the Mall? Here are just a few ideas to get you thinking about an #optoutside day:

1) #optoutside and paddle: The Nantahala and Green Rivers are running on a near-daily basis. Check Duke Power’s release schedule to plan your trip!

2) #optoutside and fish: The Nantahala and Tuckaseegee Rivers were stocked in early November and the newly stocked fish are settled in to their new homes and are feeding on passing nymphs. We offer guided float trips on the Nantahala all season long.

3) #optoutside and take a day-long hike: Hiking from Ledbetter Creek along the Bartram Trail is a challenging day hike culminating in a spectacular view at Cheoah Bald. This hike climbs ~3,000 ft over 6.6 miles -comparable to hiking the Grand Canyon from river to rim!

4) #optoutside and go on a short Hike: Hiking to Wesser Bald Fire Tower from Tellico Gap is an excursion that only takes a few hours to complete and culminates in a gorgeous (pun intended) 360 degree view of Western NC.

5) #optoutside and bike: Tsali Recreation Area. Winter an excellent time to push yourself hard and find your limit – without sweating too much. Want to check out new trails? The Cherokee Fire Mountain trails are outstanding!

#shopsmall

Nantahala River, NC. – 2017 – Endless River Adventures, in partnership with our industry sponsors, is pleased to announce the 13th annual Nantahala Open. The date of this year’s event is Saturday, April 29th, 2017. The Nantahala Open will again be dedicated to Team River Runner.

And Oskar Blues Brew will be served!

8PM(ish) – 10PM – viewing of 2017 Nantahala Open Video and prizes!! Finishing off with a raffle for the Custom Liquid Logic Braap – donated by a generous anonymous sponsor, with proceeds going to Team River Runner.

In addition to the main event, there is a scheduled release on both the Cheoah and the Cascades/Upper Nantahala all weekend!!

April 29th will be here before you know it so start making plans now and help make the 9th annual Nantahala Open an event that reflects what we all do– have fun on the river!

For updates on event specifics, keep an eye on the Nantahala Open Facebook and Endless River Adventures Facebook.

What would get me out of the Nantahala Gorge on a beautiful late-winter weekend and up to the Bluegrass State? How about the opportunity to be a part of the National Paddling Film Festival!

For 35 years the National Paddling Film Festival has been hosting an annual competition to determine the best in paddle sport videos and images and to support American Whitewater and river conservation.

The 2017 event was an uber good time, definitely worth going! While the highlight was checking out Saturday’s round of films, it was great to catch up with a lot of old friends. Having heard about the Elkhorn over the years, it was cool to be there for the Elkhorn Race – a super-fun event held the morning of the festival. It was great to have the AW Field takeout for folks to have lunch and warm up. Thank you to the guy that brought 300 Subway sandwiches. A special thanks to Mark Singleton and the others working for resources like this takeout, and for general river stewardship at American Whitewater.… Mark is about the most dedicated and consistently active paddler I’ve ever known, and I’m thrilled that he is the lead guy at AW.

Congratulations to Chief for winning the race for his club; his end-of-race pass put them seconds ahead. It was great to see the “legend” again, and to visit and meet the awesome Kentucky whitewater locals. Must say Kentucky paddlers are one of the best bunches in the sport.

And what would a festival be in Kentucky without bourbon?? Thank you to Buffalo Trace for their hosting. They provided a great venue that is a beautiful historical site and, of course, nose-wrinkling good whiskey shots.

Knowing what it takes to put on such an event, I want to recognize and say thank you to the sponsors and all the volunteers that helped us enjoy such a fun event! I am proud that Endless River Adventures supports the NPFF. And I hope to see y’all next year!
